Meta to Shut Down Workplace, Partners with Zoom for Migration

Meta Platforms announced plans to discontinue its business communication platform, Workplace, in a strategic shift to focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse development.

The company believes AI and metaverse technologies hold the potential to revolutionize the future of work. A spokesperson confirmed the discontinuation in a statement, highlighting the company's commitment to these emerging fields.

This decision follows a period of growth for Workplace, reaching 7 million paid subscribers in 2021. However, Meta is prioritizing long-term investments and will phase out Workplace over the next two years.

To ease the transition, Meta has partnered with Zoom Video Communications. Zoom's Workvivo platform has been designated as the preferred migration partner for Workplace customers.

Existing Workplace users will experience no disruption until August 2025. After that date, the platform will cease to function. However, data will remain accessible until May 2026.

Meta will also offer customers options to download their data and receive billing relief during the migration window. The company will actively encourage users to transition to Workvivo for the next two years.

Workvivo itself is a business communication tool acquired by Zoom last year. This partnership positions Zoom to potentially gain a significant number of new users as former Workplace subscribers migrate to Workvivo.
